Deciding where the best place to visit in Thailand for first timers is overwhelming. With its diverse landscapes, rich culture, and array of attractions, Thailand offers something for every traveler. To help you narrow down your options and make an informed decision on the best place to visit in Thailand for first timers, consider the following factors:

  1. Interests and Preferences: Start by identifying your interests and preferences as a traveler. Are you seeking a relaxing beach getaway, an adventurous trek through nature, a cultural immersion in historical sites, or a vibrant urban experience? Thailand offers all of these and more. Knowing what you’re most interested in will help you focus on destinations that align with your travel style.

  2. Duration of Stay: Consider the length of your trip when deciding where to go in Thailand. If you have a week or less, it’s advisable to choose a region or a few cities to explore in-depth. If you have more time, you can venture farther and cover multiple regions, experiencing the diversity the country has to offer.

  3. Season and Weather: Thailand has different climate zones, so it’s important to consider the weather conditions during your planned visit. The country experiences three main seasons: the cool season (November to February), the hot season (March to May), and the rainy season (June to October). Research the weather patterns for the specific regions you’re interested in to ensure you choose a suitable time to visit.

  4. Popular Tourist Destinations: Thailand is renowned for its popular tourist destinations that offer a well-rounded experience for first-time visitors. Some of the must-visit places include Bangkok, the bustling capital city with its vibrant street life and cultural landmarks; Chiang Mai, known for its ancient temples, traditional markets, and opportunities for trekking and interacting with elephants; Phuket, the famous beach destination with its stunning coastline and lively nightlife; and Krabi, offering breathtaking beaches, crystal-clear waters, and incredible rock formations.

  5. Off-the-Beaten-Path Destinations: If you prefer a more off-the-beaten-path experience, Thailand has plenty of hidden gems to discover. Consider destinations like Pai, a charming hippie town in the mountains of northern Thailand; Ayutthaya, the ancient capital with its UNESCO World Heritage Site ruins; or Koh Lanta, a serene and less crowded island with pristine beaches.

  6. Budget: Your budget will also play a role in determining where to go in Thailand. Some destinations, especially popular tourist spots, may be more expensive than others. Research the average costs of accommodation, transportation, and activities in different regions to ensure they align with your budget.

What I wish I knew before going to Thailand?

Thailand is a very safe destination. I wasn’t sure about this due to never traveling to Asia before, but I felt safer in Thailand than I do in the U.S. The people are extremely friendly and happy to have you. I felt so welcomed everywhere I went by the people of Thailand, and would feel completely safe traveling solo to this stunning Southeast Asia destination.

Download the Grab app, aka Thailand’s Uber. Getting around Thailand is relatively easy, even without the Grab app. Tuk-tuks and red buses are driving around constantly in the touristy spots in Thailand to take you wherever you need to go. If you are traveling off the grid, you may want to look into booking transportation ahead of time or renting a car, but overall I never had an issue getting around Thailand.

Bargaining is a common practice in markets and smaller shops in Thailand. However, it’s important to do it respectfully and with a smile. Everything is already so cheap in Thailand, I didnt even know this was a thing until halfway through my trip. As for tipping, it is not mandatory, but it’s appreciated for good service.

We always tipped like we would in the states at dinner, also because our service was exceptional. Tipping around 10% of the bill is customary in restaurants and for services like massages or taxis.

We would always tip our driver, tour guide, and just anyone else that we felt helped us in a way we believed deserved it. The thai people I encountered were so appreciative, I never felt pressure to tip anyone and everyone I did was so gracious.

Your spicy is not the same as Thailand’s spicy! My husband learned this the hard way when we was sweating bullets eating his meal. Thai food is very spicy and even saying mild spice could be very spicy for the average person.

Don’t be afraid of the street food, it is some of the best food you’ll get in Thailand and part of the authentic experience. We never had an issue with street food during our stay, but you should take obvious precautions. Choose stalls that have a high turnover of food, indicating freshness. Look for clean and hygienic food preparation practices.

Doing a tour is worth it. Tours are super inexpensive and it saves you so much stress and hassel especially if you plan on doing a day trip. We did a day trip for sunrise to Phi Phi Island, and I felt as though it was so cheap for what we got, a full day snrokeling, visiting all the best spots in Koh Phi Phi, breakfast, lunch, and the guide was my personal photographer I loved every second of it.

Make sure to check the embassy website for all the up-to-date information on traveling to Thailand.
